About the Program
Gain new perspectives on the American Jewish experience as the Skirball awards the 2024–25 Friedman Prize to Andrew Fogel, author of the essay “Superman's Jaw.” Join Skirball Rabbi in Residence, Beau Shapiro for a stimulating fireside chat with Fogel exploring the relationship between popular culture, Jewish values, and the American Jewish experience.
About the Prize
Established in memory of the Skirball’s founding chairman, Howard I. Friedman, the annual Friedman Prize invites graduate students from across the US and beyond to submit essays offering perspectives on American Jewish experiences.
About Andrew Fogel

Andrew Fogel is a historian of popular culture whose research and writing explores the place of superheroes in the everyday world and the power they hold over the American imagination for both kids and adults. He completed his PhD at Purdue University and will be the Visiting Scholar at the Center for Jewish History this fall.
