About the Class
Mah Jongg is a game of both skill and luck that originated in China many centuries ago. It was brought to the West in the 1920s and is played with four players seated around a table. Tiles are shuffled, die are cast, and rituals involving the allocation of tiles and then the exchange of tiles begin. The first person to match a hand of fourteen tiles and thus call “Mah Jongg" ends the game, whereupon tiles are scored, and a winner is declared. This course introduces the beginner to the basic rules and simple strategies. Learn to play this enjoyable, social, and thought-provoking game!
Facilitator: Ronni Rice, a.k.a. Marvelous Mrs. Mahj fell asleep countless nights to the sound of tapping Mah Jongg tiles; her mom, grandmother, aunt, and all their friends played regularly. Though her mom offered to teach her how to play, she didn’t think it was cool for a kid to play. It wasn’t until her own kids were in elementary school that she was reintroduced to the game and her love affair began.
In 2018, a friend enlisted her help in creating a group whose goal was simply to play more Mahj and to teach others. Mahjong for Beginners and More was born with an initial roster of sixteen players, which subsequently grew until they had over 160+ players in their group. Post-Covid, Marvelous Mrs. Mahj was born to continue her goal to teach and spread her love of Mah Jongg. "It is a powerful tool for our brain and soul, enriching our lives mentally, socially and emotionally."
