Banquet Sous Chef, Hospitality and Private Events

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a capable Banquet Sous Chef. Reporting to the Executive Chef, this position is responsible for the execution of all banquet events and for managing back-of-house staff during certain a la carte services, functioning as a liaison between the frontline kitchen staff, the Executive Chef, and the front of house management team.

Starting salary: $70,000 per year

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, oversee, and assist in day-to-day culinary operations of the banquet kitchen as it pertains to banquets
  • Lead the Banquet Kitchen Team in food preparation and presentation during all events.
  • Assign detailed preparation and specific duties lists to auxiliary banquet kitchen staff for upcoming events
  • Select, order, and inspect and use only the highest standard food product in preparation of all menu items as per Banquet Event Order (BEO)
  • Oversee and aid in production and execution of menu items.
  • Monitor the receipt, storage, and rotation of food (complying with health department regulations), including coverage, labeling, dating, and placing items in proper containers for kitchen service
  • Supervise, aid, and inspect daily cleaning procedures of kitchen, walk-in, and freezers
  • Help train and supervise kitchen employees on proper techniques, plating, and organization; evaluate employees’ performance, give guidance, and discipline as necessary; create and maintain schedules; ensure employees punch in and out at the correct times

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes:

  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, and practices of volume food preparation and of sanitary methods used in food preparation and kitchen maintenance

Director of Gallery Learning, Education

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a Director of Gallery Learning to oversee a collaborative team that develops and facilitates participatory, affective learning experiences for young people and adults focused on Jewish culture and history, immigration, and Civil Rights. Reporting to the Vice President of Education and Family Programs, this year-round, full-time position is part of the leadership team of the Education Department. The schedule includes weekdays, weekends, and holidays. 

The Skirball presents Jewish stories as American experiences to build a sense of shared humanity and strengthen a society where diverse views can be shared respectfully. The organization presents joyful, and sometimes challenging, content in age-appropriate ways to build empathy as an antidote to hate. Programs primarily take place in Skirball galleries, including Visions and Values: Jewish Life from Antiquity to America, Noah’s Ark, and changing exhibitions. 

Pay rate: $85,000/yr

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership: Oversee all aspects of gallery teaching and learning for young people and adults at the Skirball through our in-demand school programs and robust offering of public and private docent-led tours. Identify and codify interpretation strategies that engage visitors of all ages in inquiry-based, experiential learning. Refine and deepen the pedagogy and set the culture around teaching and learning. This position oversees a team of managers, content specialists, and coordinators.
  • Curriculum Development: Oversee the design and development of tour outlines and talking points, educational materials, lesson plans, and activities that help achieve Skirball priorities.
  • Hiring and Training: In collaboration with managers and content specialists, recruit and coach approx. 10 educators and 50+docents on effective, age-appropriate interpretation strategies. Plan a regular schedule of classes and workshops featuring guest speakers and scholars on Jewish culture and history, anti-bias education, and arts education.
  • Evaluation and Improvement: Evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs and make improvements based on educator and visitor feedback and data. Work with the team to keep statistical information on programs and document compelling evidence to demonstrate impact.
  • Community Engagement: Build strategic partnerships with key stakeholders at schools, community organizations, and other cultural institutions to deepen the Skirball’s impact.
  • Future Planning: Play a key role in envisioning the future of gallery learning at the Skirball based on research into best practices in museum education and community building. Opening in spring 2029, a re-envisioned core exhibition will grow and expand audience reach and engage visitors more deeply with the Skirball’s Jewish roots. 

Qualifications, Experiences, and Attributes:

  • 5+ years in a related position with increasing responsibility, including management of strategic planning, budget, and supervision of employees
  • Strong managerial and interpersonal skills; proven ability to guide and inspire teams of educators and docents
  • Depth of knowledge about Jewish culture, history, and traditions and/or experience teaching Jewish Inclusion Education

Educator, Noah’s Ark and Family Programs

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a skilled, inspiring Noah’s Ark and Family Programs Educator to facilitate school and public programs. Reporting to Director of Noah’s Ark and Family Programs, this position will help develop and facilitate participatory programs for families of all types, especially those with young children, including programs for Noah’s Ark at the Skirball and a newly reimagined play garden, Art Studio, Archaeology Dig, and more. The Educator will facilitate school and family learning through activities such as puppetry, movement, percussion, cooperative games, storytelling, gardening, and hands-on art making activities. This position serves as host within the gallery, imparting key Skirball and Noah’s Ark messages, and helping to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively to ensure successful gallery experiences for school groups and for the public (e.g., performances of memorized cultural flood stories, puppetry, art-making activities, and participatory movement and music making)

Responsibilities

  • Washes and dries dishes, glasses, utensils, pots and pans, and related food preparation/serving items and equipment
  • Loads and operates the dishwasher per approved guidelines
  • Maintains all cleaning/washing equipment at proper temperature and in proper operating order; loads equipment correctly; checks temperature per approved schedule and adjusts as needed; disassembles, inspects, cleans, performs maintenance on, and reassembles equipment properly

On-Call Educator (Limited-Term), Noah’s Ark and Family Programs

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks dynamic and friendly limited-term, on-call Educators. Reporting to the Manager of Noah’s Ark and Family Programs, this position facilitates public programs within Noah’s Ark, the Skirball’s interactive exhibition for children and families, as well as in the Family Art Studio, Archaeology Dig, and a variety of seasonal Family Programs offerings during summer 2025.

On-Call Educators are part of a collaborative team that implements participatory programs for families of all types, especially those with young children. They facilitate learning through activities such as full-body puppetry, movement, percussion and singing, cooperative games, storytelling, and art-making. They also serve as hosts within the gallery, imparting key Noah’s Ark messages and helping to maintain a safe, orderly, and welcoming environment. 

Shifts are scheduled on an as-needed basis, typically during occasional weekday afternoons (approximately 12:00–5:00 PM) and weekends (9:30 AM–5:00 PM).

Pay rate: $19.50 per hour 

Term: June 1, 2025 through Sept 1, 2025 (dates flexible)

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with Skirball team members to ensure successful experiences for family visitors, and community groups (e.g., facilitated and drop-in experiences, table-based activities, and participatory movement, music, and puppetry)

On-Call Porter

The Operations department of the Skirball Cultural Center seeks a capable, self-motivated, attentive, detail-oriented individual for the position of Porter. This person is responsible for maintaining public, office, and surrounding facilities in clean and orderly condition to meet health and safety standards. They will also be required to set up and take down furniture and equipment for special events and meetings in accordance with design plans. This is a variable-hour, on-call position. The schedule for this position is based on scheduled programs and private events. This position reports to the Senior Facilities Supervisor.

Starting salary: $19 per hour

Responsibilities:

Maintenance

  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes, and vacuums Museum exhibit spaces, hallways, stairs, restrooms, and office spaces; cleans furniture and fixtures; washes walls, windows, doors, and equipment.
  • Empties trash and garbage containers.
  • Cleans/sweeps parking lots, walkways, and surrounding areas to ensure they are free of debris.
  • Operates minor cleaning equipment and uses biologically and environmentally safe cleaning agents in accordance with safety instructions.

Notifies supervisor concerning hazardous conditions in or repairs needed to facilities or equipment.

Events/Meetings

  • Sets up tables, chairs, stands, boxes, equipment, etc. in accordance with pre-determined design plans.
  • Breaks down event and meeting set-ups and stores furniture and other equipment; ensures furniture and equipment is clean and ready for future use.
  • Cleans event areas (e.g., mops, sweeps, vacuums) as needed, to ensure area is clean and ready for the next event or meeting.
  • Ensures all trash is disposed of properly.

General

  • Assists with loading and unloading of equipment and furniture as needed; transports, stores, and/or delivers items throughout campus as requested.
  • Responds positively to requests for assistance from staff and others.
  • Performs related duties as required to meet Skirball mission and goals.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated skill in institutional housekeeping
  • Knowledge of floor care equipment, waxes, and cleaners
  • Ability to read and comprehend documents such as safety rules, cleaning chemical instructions, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals

On-Call School Programs Educator, Education Department

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a dynamic and engaging Educator to facilitate school tours for students in UTK through Grade 12. This position will lead inquiry-based tours in the Skirball’s exhibitions on Jewish culture and history, immigration, and Civil Rights, as well as in the award-winning Noah’s Ark exhibition. This role is ideal for educators passionate about working with students in a museum setting and creating joyful, interactive experiences.

Shifts for school programs are scheduled as needed, primarily Tuesday through Friday mornings (9:00 am–1:00 pm) during the school year. Additional opportunities may be available for public programs, family events, and special exhibitions on weekday afternoons and weekends.

Part-Time Busser, Zeidler’s Café

  • Appropriately set tables for meals, including sanitizing and setting up items such as linens, silverware, and glasses

  • Follow established schedule in cooking, baking, sanitation, and related activities
  • Determine proper cooking time and temperature
  • Operate broiler, ovens, grills, fryers, and a variety of other kitchen equipment
  • Clean and sanitize all food preparation equipment and ensure that it is kept in a safe and operable condition
  • Keep track of invoices and give them to the supervisor
  • Perform custodial duties such as mopping floors, washing walls, and cleaning refrigerators
  • Understand and abide by the standard portion sizes, cooking methods, quality standards, and kitchen rules, policies, and procedures

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes:

  • Working knowledge of methods, materials, and practices of volume food preparation; knowledge of sanitary methods used in food preparation and kitchen maintenance
  • Physical ability to lift and carry heavy bowls and to stand and walk most of the working day
  • Ability to read an event order and pay attention to detail and to interact in a friendly, professional manner with other team members
  • Ability to work 24-30 hours per week on mornings, evenings, and holidays

Project Coordinator, Operations

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a mature, self-motivated, and detail-oriented Project Coordinator to support the Operations Department, which encompasses Security, Facilities, Engineering, Purchasing, Audio Visual, and Logistics. Reporting to the Deputy Director of Operations, this position is responsible for performing a wide variety of duties relating to special projects, facilities services, maintenance, purchasing, building improvements, refurbishments, and related administrative duties.

Starting salary: $29/hour

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate various contractor service agreements (e.g., landscape, pest-control, painting, pond maintenance)
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage special projects and assist with developing the scopes of work for various projects
  • Conduct research related to projects and daily operations
  • Schedule and lead project meetings regularly with contractors and staff
  • Review the Skirball’s event schedule to minimize project impact on programs, private events, and staff
  • Work closely and conduct job walks with contractors and service providers to review scope of work and bid specifications
  • Coordinate and schedule tasks with engineering, porters, security, AV, grounds, and outside vendors
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation; review progress and provide ongoing critique for completeness, coordination, and constructability
  • Provide advice and assistance regarding approvals, permits, and insurance requirements
  • Prepare standard documentation and reporting forms, project status updates, submittal logs, anticipated cost reports, requests for information (RFIs), and submittal and RFI tracking reports
  • Obtain regular progress reports from the project team 
  • Update the calendar to reflect timeline shifts and project schedule changes
  • Receive and verify invoices for accuracy and approvals; forward for payment
  • Provide backup support to the Operations Help Desk and other Operations administrative functions 
  • Maintain and oversee vendor service agreements
  • Attend and actively participate in staff meetings; take notes; prepare and distribute minutes
  • Assist with the receipt and distribution of incoming and outgoing mail and packages
  • Maintain office supplies inventory; assist with the coordination of maintenance, repair, and/or replacement of office equipment
  • Prepare a wide variety of routine correspondence, forms, and reports
  • Plan, organize, and coordinate department meetings, events, and training sessions 
  • Assist with special events and minor projects as needed
  • Coordinate travel arrangements for staff
  • Process invoices and purchase orders
  • Respond to telephone calls and emails from staff and outside vendors

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes:

  • Bachelor's Degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience in project management, risk management, and performance management 
  • 5+ years of working experience in construction management or project management-related work
  • Prior experience in an administrative role supporting operational functions
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, deadlines, and follow-through
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and manage a changing and varied workload
  • Excellent client-facing and internal communication skills and the ability to negotiate contracts and draft business documents independently
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and experience with project management software tools
  • Core knowledge of construction concepts
  • Preferred: fluency in Spanish

Temporary On-Call Associate, Visitor Experience

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks a cordial, reliable, and flexible collaborator with excellent communication skills for the temporary on-call position of Visitor Experience Associate. After an initial training period, this position will be called in to work on an as-needed basis during normal operating hours Tuesday–Friday, 10:30 am–5:00 pm and Saturday–Sunday, 8:30 am–5:00 pm, with potential for additional hours and some schedule shifts to accommodate evening programming. This is a temporary, on-call position. After a two-day, paid training period, this position can anticipate working approximately 8–24 hours per month. Available immediately and will end on June 30, 2026.

Starting salary: $19/hour

Responsibilities:

  • Greet, welcome, and engage with visitors in a warm, professional, and outgoing manner that sets them up for a positive Skirball experience
  • Proactively seek information about Skirball operations and maintain up-to-date knowledge about policies, programs, exhibitions, and offerings to share with visitors and colleagues
  • Perform box office sales and generate will-call lists using the organization’s ticketing system
  • Organize and handle visitor transactions with attention to detail while providing courteous customer service with discretion and security
  • Receive, track, and account for daily cash and credit receipts ensuring accuracy and completeness
  • Work closely with Security, Porters, and Volunteers at the membership desk to help the lobby run smoothly and ensure a positive visitor experience
  • Share visitor experiences and weekend activity reports with the Visitor Experience Manager and other senior staff as requested
  • Respond appropriately to visitor feedback and resolve issues with direction and/or support from management
  • Serve as a reliable and caring member of the Visitor Experience team

Temporary Registrar, Museum Department

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks an enthusiastic team player to serve as Temporary Registrar. Reporting to the Head Registrar, this short-term position is responsible for assisting with installation and the de-installation of the museum’s robust schedule of rotating exhibitions. This is an on-site position running through May 2, 2025.

Starting salary: $45/hour

Responsibilities:

  • Create digital condition reports of incoming loans
  • Track mounting and framing needs of loans to facilitate Preparators in readying loans for display
  • Assist with exhibition installation
  • Facilitate object handling with regard to installing, deinstalling, packing, shipping, and storage
  • Work closely with other members of the Museum Department, including registrars, curators, preparators, administrative staff, and exhibition coordinators

Qualifications, Experience, and Attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with coursework in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Archaeology, or closely related field preferred
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop collaborative relationships across the organization
