About the Program

Dance, sing, and jam along at the Skirball’s celebration of Make Music Day, a FREE festival of music held every June 21 in more than 700 cities in 120 countries around the world. Open to everyone—all ages and levels of musical experience welcome—Make Music Day at the Skirball is part of the citywide festival Make Music Los Angeles (MMLA), now in its fifth year.

All activities are FREE; Museum admission not included.

Stop by anytime during the day to construct your own creative instrument out of recycled materials.

Music Performances and Workshops

Las Colibrí (The Hummingbirds)
12:30–1:15 p.m.
Experience a new take on traditional mariachi with the exciting, upbeat sounds of this groundbreaking all-female string ensemble.

Motherland Music
1:30–2:15 p.m.
Get in the groove with your own drum, learn rhythms from the djembe masters, or just dance to the beats of this African drumming collective.

Gary Allegretto
2:30–3:15 p.m.
Don’t miss Gary Allegretto’s award-winning Hohner-sponsored harmonica workshop, in which novices (ages 5 and up) will learn to play four songs! A limited number of Hohner harmonicas will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.

Yale Strom
3:30–4:15 p.m.
Bring your own musical instrument and join the world’s leading klezmer scholar-ethnographer-artist for an all-ages klezmer jam! Download sheet music for “Buhusher Nign” and “Stoliner Skotshne” for instruments in C and instruments in B-flat.
